Prompt learners to reflect on their learning using survey tools

Author:
What: Learners complete exit tickets using online survey tools
Conduct a formative assessment by having learners share their takeaways from the lesson using an “exit ticket” created with an online survey tool such as Google Forms. Learners can complete the exit ticket synchronously, at the end of class, or asynchronously, as that day’s homework.

Why: Formative assessment, Self-monitoring

By using tools such as Google Forms or other survey/polling tools to collect exit tickets, you can give learners the time for deeper reflection by having learners complete the tickets asynchronously. Using these types of tools automates the collection of information, including learners’ questions, that can be displayed during the next class as part of a Q&A discussion.

Evidence-Based Strategies

This routine is supported by the following strategies:

How: Google Forms

Create a Google Form with exit ticket prompts, e.g., “What’s one of your take-aways from the lesson? What’s something you want to learn more about? Which classmate contributed to your learning?”, etc. Google Forms provide several different question choices making it possible to vary the kinds of “exit ticket” responses. Once learners have submitted their responses, you can view multiple choice responses in bar or pie charts and text responses in lists on Google Sheets. Review the exit ticket responses to adjust your instruction and/or reply to learners’ exit questions in subsequent lessons.

EdTech Tool Types: Survey + Polling

LL.3 Set Goals and Reflect

Elicit from learners how the process of completing the Google Form exit tickets relates to taking control of their learning ( by evaluating how a particular lesson addressed their goals and interests. Encourage students to be thoughtful in their responses, by sharing the blank form and asking questions such as: “Which of these questions requires deeper thinking? Why? Why are some questions on the form required and others optional? How will the information from the completed forms help our class?” Later, when you have a Google spreadsheet with all the responses, review the responses with the class and ask learners to draw conclusions and make inferences based on the information.

LL.2 Adapt to New Technology

Learners with limited digital skills may not be familiar with the online survey tools they’re being asked to complete. Assess learners’ prior knowledge by asking: “When do people fill out forms online? Have you filled out an online form before? Which one(s)?” Screen share the Google Form learners will be using and demonstrate completing the form, while asking: “How did I get to the form? What does the red asterisk next to a question mean? Which questions are multiple choice? Uh-oh, got an error message? Why? Can I take this survey on my phone? Can I use voice-to-text for short and long answer questions?”, etc.
