Capture observations and experiences using smartphone recording apps

What: Learners capture experiential learning moments using video and/or audio recording
Learners take video and/or audio notes (with permission) during experiential learning events such as a field trip, expert interview, hands-on language experience task, etc., using the video or audio recording apps on their smartphones.

Why: Note-taking and Reflection

Experiential learning requires learners’ close attention and participation. Recording their observations, rather than writing them, allows learners to focus on what they’re seeing and hearing. Learners with limited language proficiency or literacy skills benefit by being able to take notes in real time without having to write them. By capturing portions of the event on audio or video, learners can later review what they heard and saw and, if desired, write key observations. They can also display or share their recordings with the class for further discussion and comparison.

Evidence-Based Strategies

This routine is supported by the following strategies:

How: Smartphone or Other Mobile Recording Device

If the event is a field trip or expert interview, ensure that recording is permitted. Make the interviewee aware that learners will be recording for classroom use. Next, help learners develop a plan for recording portions of their experience on their smartphones. Confirm whether learners know how to record video or audio on their smartphones or other mobile devices (e.g., a tablet or notebook). Consider having learners try out recording an observation in their home and uploading it to the LMS or emailing it to you so that you help troubleshoot any issues. You may also wish to use a free audio transcription tool, such as otter.ai, which allows you to upload audio files to have them transcribed to text.

EdTech Tool Types: Audio Recording

CR.6 Produce Multimedia

While learners will have different devices, most default audio and video apps have similar features. Help learners locate the various features on their smartphone camera and audio recording apps. Demonstrate each feature’s use by thinking aloud as you use the proper terminology, e.g. “Hmmm which icon do I tap to access my camera? Which symbol do I tap to start recording? I think it’s this circle. Okay, how do I stop the recording? How do I know if it worked? I think I need to play back the recording. What symbol do I tap for that?”, etc. Be sure to review how to save, locate and share the file once it’s recorded.

WO.4 Choose the Appropriate Tools

Help learners build their understanding of the purpose and function of different apps and software as they’re introduced to these tools. Have learners consider which tools would be most appropriate and/or effective in different situations by asking questions such as, “Which would be more effective during a workplace tour, a video recording or an audio recording? Why? How about during an informational interview with an employer?”, etc.
